August 21, 2010
Batesville AR, to Little Rock, AR: 95 Miles
Several of my LR friends gathered for a little impromptu catch up at our favorite cigar shop: The Pipe & Tobacco Shop (link). Some I’ve known for almost 20 years. There I said it. But I still don’t believe it. We can’t be that old!
After the shop closed we all went out for drinks. It was great to catch up with everyone.
Day 13-16
August 17-20
Batesville, AR
Stayed with my brother Glen and his wife Debbie, hung out with the folks, saw friends, relaxed, worked, and generally ate too much fried food. Glen completed the trip with one of my birthday dinners: Bacon wrapped venison filets. Can’t beat that!

Jefferson City, MO to Batesville, AR: 251 Miles
I’ve been remiss in practicing my “Billy Bartels school of motojournalism” left hand shooting technique, so I chose to day to shoot from the road. First up, a self portrait at 70MPH:
As with most new skills, 90 percent of the shots were a waste of 1’s and 0’s. But there were a few shots of the countryside:
And once I crossed the border, plenty of curves to enjoy and keep me awake.
Dinner with my brother and his wife concluded phase one of the trip. Now to enjoy family and catch up with friends…

Clayton, IA to Jefferson City, MO: 362 Miles
With all my cousins out of town, I bypassed St. Louis, the original plan, to make a more direct line to Batesville. Stopped at J & R Cycles to pick out another touring bag. They were quite helpful in letting me drag all their bags out to the parking lot to see how each would fit with my current set up. I settled on a T-bag that worked well with my Marsee.
There is some really beautiful country in eastern Iowa:
Hot and humid. I was reminded again that the breeze never blows lower than the height of the corn.
The Prison Brewery offered a fine IPA and “fall-off-the-bone” ribs. Well worth the stop.

Cedar Rapids, IA to Clayton, IA: 96 Miles
Well, perhaps too good a time: got off to a super slow start. It was a good thing I was only going to Clayton. On my way up 151, I ran across the National Motorcycle Museum.
I could have stayed there all day, but only got to spend an hour there since Dave was expecting me at his cabin on the Mississippi for dinner. Here are a few shots of the museum:
Turned out to be a beautiful day as this shot of the river from just south of Clayton shows:
Had a great time catching up with Dave (thanks for the steak dinner Dave!) and then went north 10 miles to Pikes Peak State Park to turn in early.
